Second Vaccination Dates:
Pups will have their first vaccination on Monday 9th December which means they need their second vaccination between the 24th December and 6th January.
Please see below for details on what vaccinations they will need.
Vaccinations:
Your pup will need its second vaccination at 10 weeks old and then can go out a week after that.
The vaccination required is DHPPi and Lepto 2. If you choose to have the Lepto 4 vaccination then that invalidates all guarantees we give and there is a clause in our contracts that we ask you to sign to confirm you are aware of this. Our vet uses the Nobivac brand but other brands like Canigen are 100% compatible.
We don’t allow our pups or adults to have the Lepto 4 after horrific experiences breeder friends have had. A lot of vets pass it off as scare mongering - I can assure you it isn’t - I have first hand seen puppies with heart breaking life changing problems and many who have died after having this vaccine. They will also tell you there is a risk with all vaccines - yes there is but this particular vaccine is not worth the risk - the extra 2 strains of Lepto that it covers aren’t particularly prevalent in the UK. You can read the tragic experiences of many dog owners here https://m.facebook.com/groups/322967551247441/?ref=share
A lot of people won’t give the Lepto vaccine at all and prefer to titre test - we have never had any problems with the Lepto 2 and don’t know anybody first hand who has so do use it.
Just to warn you - we have had reports of some vets being unbelievably rude (and borderline abusive in some cases!) when people have requested the Lepto 2 - it’s your pup and you are the paying customer so do your research and don’t be afraid to be firm - a good vet should be open to respecting your decision and working with you - if they’re not then look for a better one who is!!
Food:
Our pups are weaned onto raw food and all our dogs and cats are all raw fed. After much research and trialling other options we have found this to be incomparable to any other food.
We are often asked if we can feed a particular pup a dry food instead and I’m really sorry but the answer will always be no! We raise the pups the very best we can in all areas and the raw diet is so much better for them - for their digestion, teeth, eyes, coat - the list is endless! Also from a human point of view because there are no nasty fillers and rubbish in it the amount of poo is much much less and much less offensive in the aroma department!!
We are also regularly asked which dry food we recommend for people who don’t want to continue the raw - this answer is none! Not to be awkward we just genuinely don’t so it would be up to you to research and choose one then gradually switch them over so their tummies don’t get upset - there is advice on how to do this in your puppy pack.
Please don’t feed them human raw meat - it’s not as simple as that and a lot of research and more science goes into the raw diet now than the “fit as a butcher’s dog” days! Human meat isn’t prepared properly and has salmonella etc risks. Being all natural you don’t need to use the same brand of raw we do - any complete mince with a ratio of 80/10/10 (80% meat 10% bone 10% offal) is fine.
Don’t forget to defrost before feeding - we’ve had lots of families message asking why their pup shakes so much during feeds and when investigated it has transpired they were feeding it to them still frozen!
The Journey Home:
Legally dogs have to be restrained when travelling in the car. Pups usually sleep once the car starts moving - we had one sleep all the way back to Aberdeen! Personally we don’t advocate the restraints that clip onto a collar and into the seatbelt - there’s been too many dogs killed after hard breaking - a harness is much safer for them. Otherwise a crate, a box in the footwell if you have a passenger who can take charge should pup wake up are all good options.
Pup won’t need feeding on the way home - what goes in must come out!!!
Toys:
Antlers and yaks milk chews are great - long lasting and safe for them. It’s a good idea to rotate toys so they don’t get bored of them and start on your furniture!
